United hit back hard
2009-11-12
MBEKWENI UNITED FC, the only team in the Drakenstein municipal jurisdiction which plays in the SAFA Vodacom League, kicked off the 2009-2010 season in great fashion by beating Steenberg United in Grassy Park in July. The victory was short lived, however, as a string of poor results followed up to the ninth match of the season, with United losing four and drawing four of those matches. The tenth match of the season brought a change of fortune to the Mbekweni team. They played six matches unbeaten, with five of those matches being straight wins. This lifted the log position of the team from twelfth position to sixth where they are equal on points with the fifth and fourth spot. Only two points seperate them from third. This change of fortune for United can be attributed to the re-signing of Andile ‘Aija’ Mbenyane from Ajax Cape Town. He returned to his old team and made a huge contribution in uplifting the team’s standard. * This past weekend United played against Steenberg United under terrible weather conditions, which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Although this left United dropping one place down the log into seventh position (out of 16 teams), there are still only two points separating the Mbekweni based team from the third spot. United plays Ajax Cape Town at Ikamva in Parow on Friday at 19:00. On Saturday, at the Boy Louw Sports Ground, United will play against the winner between Mbekweni Cosmos and Mbekweni Sundowns in the Drakenstein Mayoral Cup.
