Tour de success
2009-11-12
WIND, rain and cycling were the order of the day for this year’s Medscheme Tour de Vino, held in Franschhoek over the weekend. Unfavourable weather conditions did very little to dampen the spirit of scores of enthusiastic cyclists. This year’s Tour de Vino kicked off with a 45km mountain race on Saturday and ended with the 62,3 km and 117 km road race on Sunday. Over four hundred cyclists participated in the mountain race on Saturday despite heavy wind and cold weather. Renay Grausta (Cape Town) was the overall male winner and King of the Mountain for Saturday’s 45km mountain race, with Cornelius Muller (Stellenbosch) and Geddan Ruddock (Franschhoek) in second and third position. Hanlie Booyens (Stellenbosch) came first in the overall female category, with the second and third places going to Hilana Marais and Landi Kitching. Over 1200 entrants were registered for the road race (117km and 62,3km) on Sunday and an impressive number of cyclists participated with the teams amid endless water holes and tracks due to the heavy rains. The results from Sunday’s road races were: Elite u.23 men’s winners - 1st Jean Spies (Johannesburg); 2nd Martin Weseman (Cape Town); 3rd Jaco Venter (Joburg). Also in the Elite u.23 men, Neil McDonald won the King of the Mountains, with the Hot Spot going to Malcolm Lange. The elite ladies’ winners were: 1st Cathy Carstens; 2nd Tania Myburgh; 3rd Leanne Brown Waterson (all from Johannesburg).
