AN end to a very successful Winelands basketball league season, with the finals taking place at Solms Delta Wine Farm on Saturday, saw Desmond Tutu High School being crowned the champions for 2009. After a dodgy start to the league earlier in the season, Desmond Tutu were as determined as ever this past weekend, ensuring victories over Klein Nederburg Secondary, New Orleans Secondary and Kayamandi, to claim the trophy at the end of the day. With their inspirational captain, Sandiso Lusele, being named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, Desmond Tutu were deserved winners of the tournament’s gold league, that kicked off in August. The league winners of the silver division were Kylemore, with their convincing 44-22 victory over Paarl School of Skills in the final match. In the Winelands Primary School Basketball League, the girls’ winners were Pniel, with PC Petersen the boys’ champions. The scores were as follows:
* Gold Division - Desmond Tutu High School 21, Klein Nederburg Secondary 14, Dragon Heat 32, Daredevils 9; Desmond Tutu 19, New Orleans 15; Kayamandi 17, Dragon Heat 10, (finals) Desmond Tutu 12, Kayamandi 7.
* Silver Division - Kylemore 25, Bridges of Hope 2; Paarl School of Skills 39, Ligstraal 10; Kylemore 24, Juvenile’s Dream Team 22 (OT); Paarl School of Skills defeats Noorder-Paarl by forfeit; (finals) Kylemore 44, Paarl School of Skills 22.
* Primary Schools (Girls) - Wemmershoek 22, PC Peterson 9; Pniel 40, Simondium 4; (finals) Pniel 26, PC Peterson 22; (boys) - Solms Delta 5, Pniel 4; Simondium 24, Groendal 7; Franschhoek High 22, Wemmershoek 14; PC Petersen 22, Solms Delta 0; Simondium 14, FHS 8; (finals) PC Petersen 11, Simondium 4.
