Mayoral Cup Soccer tournament semi-final stage

THE Mayoral Cup, which has developed into one of the major sporting events on the calendar of Drakenstein Municipality in recent years, has reached the semi-final stages of the soccer tournament for 2009. With the tournament having grown so much since its inception in 2006, the Mayoral Cup has the potential of developing into a major soccer event in 2010. Not only have we seen the senior men battling it out to be crowned 2009’s champions and walking away with the prize money of R15 000, but the ladies’ teams (prize money R7 000) and junior teams (u.13’s, u.15’s and u.17’s will receive a soccer kit each) have also been giving it their all in order to claim the top prize. The semi-finals for all sections of the Mayoral Cup will take place at the Boy Louw Soccer Field this coming Saturday (21 November), starting at 10:00, with the juniors, followed by the ladies at 14:00 and the senior men at 16:00. Mbekweni United, the winners of two of the previous Mayoral Cup tournaments, will be up against Juventus in the first men’s senior semi-final, with City Killers squaring off against Barcelona in the second semi-final. On Saturday 28 September, the finals of the Mayoral Cup will take place at the Mbekweni Soccer Stadium.
