A COURSE on the breeding of alpacas and the use of their wool will be presented at Inca Vale Farm outside Wellington on 4 September with a renowned international judge and breeder, Jenny Jackson, as guest speaker.

Jackson, from Western Australia, runs a herd of over 400 alpacas south of Perth, and also lectures extensively from basic husbandry to advanced reproduction like embryo transfer. Her lectures are easy to follow and her course notes are comprehensive.

Jenny also will speak about the global growth of the market, and how Australia has developed to have a national herd of over 70 000 alpacas in 18 years.

Dr Gavin Lindhorst of African Alpacas started the alpaca industry in South Africa in 2000 when he imported the foundation herd from Chile.

He will share his five years of local experience, and the management of his herd of over 100 alpacas, including health issues and cria care.

Giving an independent perspectvie will be Lorna Ramsdon who attended the International Alpaca Judging Course in Peru last year, and is also active in equestrian circles as judge and events co-ordinator. An independent perspective.

The course fee of R395 includes notes and refreshments. To book, phone Mandy on (031) 910-5773.
