Culinary Academy shines

THE Culinary Academy has again confirmed its position as South Africa’s leading academy for hospitality training.

The Culinary Academy founded in 1996 in Cape Town and now operating from the Backsberg Wine Estate, announced recently that they have been granted full programme approval and full national provider accredited status from the Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Training & Education Authority.

“The Culinary Academy is the first chef school to obtain national programme approval outside Johannesburg, and the second nationally to do so,” stated Rebecca Hurst, director and co-founder.

“We are honoured to have been accredited by Theta and know that our students will value this esteemed approval from a nationally recognised accrediting body.”

The Theta accreditation now brings The Culinary Academy’s international and local accreditation to three. The Culinary Academy is a registered and approved centre for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s International Qualifications (in its second year) as well as City and Guilds – London (now in its 12th year).

“Achieving accreditation is a process of rigorous internal review, evaluation, and adjustment and can take several years to complete. During these years, the academy had to develop and implement a plan to meet the high standards set by Theta, LCCI and City & Guilds,” says Marketing Manager, Hugo Coetzee.

It is also required of The Culinary Academy to provide a high quality teaching environment, a commitment to continuous improvement, and curricula responsive to the needs of the industry and its students.

A team of national evaluators travelled to Backsberg and conducted an onsite review that included financial and human resources audits, student services and a review of all procedures.

”It takes a great deal of commitment and determination to earn and maintain one’s accreditation,” said Rebecca Hurst.

“Schools not only must meet specific standards of excellence, but their facilities and staff make a commitment to ongoing improvement to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver high quality education to students.”
