Nederburg takes wine trophy
2005-09-01
South Africa’s only trophy in this year’s Tri-Nations Wine Challenge has gone to the 2004 Nederburg Noble Late Harvest, described by the panellists, all prominent international wine critics, as a “stand-out wine”.
Wines judged in the event are submitted by invitation only, nominated by members of the panel. The award was announced at a dinner in Sydney last week.
Pitted in its category against other South African contenders as well as those from Australia and New Zealand, the trophy winner was judged the best of 15 by the panel, chaired by Robert Joseph, the founder and editor of Wine International magazine.
Joseph, formerly the publishing editor of Wine (UK), judges on major wine competitions throughout the world.
Other panellists were renowned Australian wine writer James Halliday, also a wine-grower and winemaker; Bob Campbell MW, a highly respected wine writer and educator from New Zealand; and leading South African wine writer Michael Fridjhon.
The 2004 Nederburg Noble Late Harvest recently won the trophy for best dessert wine on the 2005 Fairbairn Capital Wine Trophy Show, while another of Nederburg’s noble late harvest wines, the 2002 Eminence, last month took gold on the prestigious international forum for Muscat wines, Muscats du Monde. Nederburg is South Africa’s most widely decorated winery.
