THE 11th season of Cape Dutch Connection’s “Jazz on Friday”, which kicked off on 30 October at La Brasserie in Franschhoek, is in full swing and has an interesting line-up of guest artists for the season which lasts until April.
Cape Dutch Connection is a jazz quintet with vocalist Charlette Dickson, Wesley Rustin double bass, drummer Jack Momple, Derk Blaisse on piano and a guest soloist on saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet or trombone.
The band plays jazz in the style of Benny Goodman, George Gershwin and Cole Porter as well as Brazilian Bossa Novas in the style of Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, and even some Cape Goema.
The band will be joined this Friday (27 November) by guest artist Peter Plato and on Friday 4 November by Buddy Wells.
Peter Plato was born in 1938 in Berlin, Germany, and has been playing professionally for 50 years. He is a brilliant soprano, alto saxophonist and clarinet artist, who was much inspired by American jazz musicians and jazz standards. He is a member of Cape Town’s Riverboat Jazz Band.
Saxophonist Buddy Wells has performed and recorded with many well-known South African and foreign musicians including Miriam Makeba, Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa, Jimmy Dludlu, Vusi Khumalo, Abdullah Ibrahim, Herb Ellis, Gloria Bosman, Carlo Mombelli, Interzone and Jack van Poll.
He is also a member of Tribe, a jazz quartet of Cape Town based musicians which has earned critical acclaim since its formation for improvisational music.
The first two sessions this season attracted a total of 400 jazz lovers to the venue, La Brasserie in Franschhoek. Entry is R130 per couple which includes jazz and a good bottle of local wine. The performance runs from 17:30 till 20:30.
