THE Platter’s Guide, South Africa’s original and still best-selling wine annual, celebrated its 30th anniversary with the launch of the 2010 edition and the simultaneous release of a mobile version for the Apple iPhone® and iPod touch®.

Platter’s also announced its prestigious Winery of the Year and Superquaffer of the Year awards, along with a new wide-ranging initiative to promote environmental and business sustainability in-house and through-out the local wine industry.

The 2010 edition continues Platter’s objective of being as comprehensive as possible, and features some 6000 wines, 800 wineries and brands (including more than 50 new ones), plus extensive and up-to-date information on where to go and what to do in wine country.

A strong focus on FIFA World Cup 2010 includes a full-colour photo gallery of great things to do in the winelands, plus extended coverage within the A-Z winery directory of the vast range of events, attractions and amenities to be offered by individual wine cellars during the football championships.

In a continuing focus on highlighting value for money, Platter’s tasters identify a number of entry-level wines which are exceptionally drinkable and well priced. The best of these, like the five-star candidates, go into a second round of tasting to select the Superquaffer of the Year.

The names of the top quaffers appear in the new guide under the heading ‘Wines of the Year’, along with the 41 five stars, 64 Highly Recommended wines, and a selection of over 100 reds, whites and fortifieds showing particular potential for cellaring under the banner ‘Buy Now, Drink Later’.

The five-star wines for 2010 include Nederburg Ingenuity White 2008, Chamonix Chardonnay Reserve 2008, Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, and Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest 2008.
