THE play Auditions can be Murder, a comedy by Anna Emm starring Lorraine du Toit, Vicky Stemmet, Hanri Platzoeder and Deon Lotz, can be seen at the Old Mill Theatre on 2 and 3 December at 20:00. Anna Emm is known for the more than 500 original children’s stories she’s written and produced since she launched her production company five years ago. Maybe it is her experience and insight into this simplest level of story-telling that enables her to write so well for the stage. To celebrate the end of each year she and her team puts together a stage production for grown-ups. The stories symbolically tell of revelations, trials, hopes and humour. Also starring the talented, Deon Lotz, Auditions takes a comical look at the stereotypes of actors and hopefuls in this hard industry, the competition to get the few big roles available, and the masks people wear to help them survive. When a group of actresses show up to audition for the role of a lifetime, the sparks soon fly. The director is abusive and cruel, leaving no one without a scar. So when he is discovered with a knife in his back, everyone is a suspect. “Hundreds of actors have been through our office, sound studio and rehearsal rooms during the past five years.
