Boost for skills
2005-09-01
Six months after the signing of a groundbreaking agreement between the Department of Education and the Department of Labour to fast track skills development through Further Education and Training Colleges, 225 young people are set to benefit from this initiative in the Western Cape.
Programmes from the Boland FET College, False Bay College and College of Cape Town were officially launched by the Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, on Tuesday 30 August.
The young people will receive training in the areas of agriculture, engineering and manufacturing and entrepreneurship.
The programmes are implemented through Umsobomvu Youth Fund’s skills development projects.
To ensure policy alignment and integration by public service entities, the Fund, Department of Labour (DoL) and the DoE are working in partnership to enhance youth livelihoods through structured learning targeting skills in the sectors of the economy with identified potential to absorb labour on a sustainable basis using FET colleges as training providers.
This is a strategic partnership between these three state entities, and the launch showcased the commitment of the public sector to quality service delivery. The provincial launch will serve as a platform to present the projects implemented through the Western Cape FET colleges.
