ON the eve of the festive season, law enforcers are taking a zero tolerance stance towards law-breakers. This was made clear last week when police and local traffic authorities issued fines to taxi drivers to the value of R10 000. In a joint operation, they held a roadblock in the Paarl CBD area, which was targeted at illegal taxi operators. A total of ten tickets were issued for driving without a licence, driving with a learner’s licence, driving without a professional driver’s permit and other offences. * On Saturday, with the assistance of the provincial traffic authorities, the Paarl police made seven arrests for drinking under the influence of alcohol. A roadblock was also held at the N1 tollgate, during which R11 800 worth of fines were issued. A spokesperson for Paarl police, Capt Louise du Plessis, said that they will continue a zero tolerance stance toward reckless driving, holding numerous roadblocks over the festive season. * A 47-year-old man will be spending Christmas behind bars, after he was found guilty in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court of drunken driving last week. Edgar September was arrested in January this year in Lady Grey Street for driving under the influence of alcohol. On sentencing it was noted that the accused had six previous convictions for drunken driving and he was sent straight to jail.
