Wellington team wins cycle challenge

IN a nail-biting finish, the Anderson Transport cycling team from Wellington reclaimed their title as champions of the Coronation Double Century Cycle Challenge that was held in and around the scenic town of Swellendam on Saturday. With a winning time of 05.26.25, Anderson Transport beat rivals Daikin-Gu, who came second by a mere 29 seconds. More than 2340 cyclists and 230 teams participated in the 17th Coronation DC. Most cyclists agreed that the extreme heat (with temperatures of up to 350C) and the finish proved to be the major challenges. The new finish, called the Coronation Corridor, is a 1km climb with an average gradient of over 6%. According to the team captain, Heimer Anderson, “wind, and temperatures of more than 350, made the race very hard. “After winning in 2007 against Daiken, and losing in 2008, we were very happy to claim the trophy again this year,” Anderson added. The Coronation DC brought many of South Africa’s top cyclists to Swellendam, including Arran Brown, Hanco Kachelhoffer, veteran Andrew McLean and Cathy Carstens.
