Arendse on podium at cycling event
2009-12-10
NATIONAL junior road cyclist, Avery Arendse of the Neotel Yorkshire Cycling Club in Paarl, rode to a well deserved third place at the final road cycling event of the Pedal Power Association. The event took place at the famous Paardeberg Circuit outside Paarl recently. Ryan Kemp (Daikin GU) won the race and was followed by Martin Wesserman (CPI). For the main riders it was a crucial race, this being the last race of the series and with the top ten riders only being separated by 1 minute, the riders had everything to race for. The race distance was over 78km and comprised of two laps of the Paardeberg Circuit. A breakaway group, comprising of five riders including James Tennant (SuperWatt/Club100), Lance Muller (Outriders), Abdelbassat Hanacchi (CPI), Arendse (Neotel Yorkshire) and Kemp (Daikin/Gu), worked well together and gained time quickly. After the first of the two laps the gap was nearly two minutes. By then the group had been joined by Wesserman (CPI). The main pack steadily clawed back, but in the end they managed to stay ahead and come in with some 30 seconds to spare. It came down to a sprint up the final drag for the front pack with Kemp (Daikin/Gu) timing it just right to take the win ahead of Wesserman and Arendse in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
