Boschendal auction sells three properties

THE auction of Boschendal properties this week, struck gold, at least as far as one of the properties is concerned. The historic Goede Hoop manor-house was knocked down for R23,5 million to British businessman Mark Borrie. This is however much less than the R37 million for which was hoped for by auctioneer Auction Alliance and property agency Pam Golding. This property consists of an 1821 manor-house located on 21 hectares of vineyards and orchards. According to the purchaser, who owns the Hawksmoor House Boutique Hotel outside Stellenbosch, he plans to live at this estate. Two other “founder’s estate” properties were auctioned for R9,5 million and R10 million respectively (with sizes of 20,7 ha and 21 ha). The sale of these two properties in the vineyards is subject to ratification, as they sold for less than was hoped. The auction, which netted R43 million, was well attended in a marquee tent at Boschendal. Among those present were representatives of Boschendal shareholder, listed company IFA Hotels and Resorts of Kuwait, who are also thought to be the purchasers of the two founder’s estates. These properties were apparently purchased for resale. The remaining properties scheduled to be auctioned, including the historic Rhodes Cottage on 42 ha, and the Bethlehem farm (consisting of seven farms on a total of 429 ha) were withdrawn from the auction, but are still for sale. A number of prospective foreign investors also participated through representatives.
