Drommedaris set to sail
2009-12-17
AFTER five years the Drommedaris housing project is set to sail. Almost. With 97% of the civil works completed and promises that the contractor will hand the site over before the end of December, it is still a wait-and-see game for the almost 1600 families whose units must be built here. Last week the Drakenstein mayoral committee was still discussing the delivery method: Should it be a contractor built (PLS) or a people’s housing process (PHP). With the latter, beneficiaries don’t have to contribute R2479 to get the ball rolling. The housing department and Arthob Petersen, Mayco member for housing, support the PHP method. Tommy Matthee, director of social services at Drakenstein Municipality, said that the municipality had received threats that people want to invade the Drommedaris site and suggest that the municipality should provide security. The council then recommended that the housing department appoint temporal security personnel to guard the site as part of a job creation initiative. Petersen said that the top-structure funding for the 1589 units had recently been approved by the Provincial Department of Housing. CSM Consultants have already submitted building plans, but no indication was given on when the construction of the houses will start.
