Alleged robber shot dead

Alleged robber shot dead

2009-12-17

AN alleged armed robber was shot dead last Friday, during a farm attack in Simondium.

At 15:50 three black males stormed into the office of Flenterskloof Farm, Simondium, where the secretary was sorting out the week’s wages.

One of the suspects held a firearm against her head, while another attacker held a knife. She was tied up with masking tape, but the men were caught unawares by farm owner, David de Villiers, who entered the office.

But they managed to over- power him and tie him up.

The men fled with approximately R15 000 in cash and two cellular phones. When they left the office, one of the suspects returned and aimed a firearm at the victims.

De Villiers, who had managed to untie himself, pulled out his firearm and in self-defence shot the suspect. He died on the scene.

Another suspect waited in a car, belonging to one of the workers. The attackers then fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. The driver seemingly lost control over the vehicle on the farm road about two kilometres from the scene and drove into the bushes. They then escaped further on foot into the vineyards.

The police recovered R5 000 from the deceased suspect, which was presumably part of the cash which was stolen in the office.

Members of neighbouring stations, Paarl Dog Unit, as well as the police helicopter assisted in the search for the three escapees.

None of them could be traced. Police are following all possible leads which could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

Anybody with further information can contact Groot Drakenstein Police investigating officer Detective Const Celeste Farao at 021-874-8000.

This attack follows a spate of similar such incidents in the area. Three men, all Namibian citizens, have been arrested in connection with armed robberies at homes in Paarl.
