THE Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch has become known as a place where one can meet the stars under the stars, whilst having fun in the sun. This holiday season visitors to the amphitheatre will be treated to wonderful productions and the beauty of some phenomenal women in the Winelands. The festive season will kick off with the flair of pianist Rocco de Villiers accompanied by guitarist Robert Mitchley and Tango dancers Marc Hoeben and Ina Wichterich in a production aptly called It takes 2 on 17 and 18 December. Opera singer Pretty Yende is the first phenomenal woman to grace the stage, performing her award-winning repertoire on Saturday 19 December in a Gala Concert, along with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Chris Dowdeswell. This will be Yende’s last performance before leaving South Africa to further her career abroad. On 20 and 21 December at 19:00 the annual Christmas Carols Show will feature a community choir and a brass ensemble conducted by Richard Cock and promises to be a lot of fun for the whole family, with regular audience interaction and sing-alongs. Visitors are reminded to pack their picnic baskets as both these shows are Picnic Concerts. All Jazz lovers can look forward to the incredible talent of another phenomenal woman, the internationally acclaimed South African born Tutu Puoane, who will be visiting Oude Libertas on 30 December for her only performance in the Cape region. On 31 December the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre will lead patrons into 2010 with a New Year’s Eve Swing Party with the amalgamated sounds of 1940’s and 50’s America, the vibrance of the ‘Sophia Town era, sensual Cuban arrangements and some local and international pop hits performed by the eight-piece band, The Sticky Triggers.
