A PAARLITE, Magda Meyer, was recently honoured by Lions International for her community work. Magda, who runs a soup kitchen in Pedro Street, Paarl East, was one of 12 women recently honoured by the Lions International District 410A for outstanding service to the community. The district which covers Namibia, Northern and Western Cape annually pays tribute to these remarkable women. This year, Lions Club of Paarl nominated local philanthropist Magda Meyer and she walked away with top honours. In addition to a cash prize to continue her work, Magda received a Louis Volks Humanitarian Award in recognition for her work. At her home Magda does not only have a soup kitchen, but her front garden and a side alley have been turned into a community centre with a set of restrooms, benches and tables and a small garden. Up to 400 people turn up twice a week at the centre not only to be fed, but to access a range of community services from nutrition counselling to HIV/Aids advice, and to network with other people with similar problems and work on strategies together.
