28% of matrics fail

ONLY 72% of local matrics passed the final examination of 2009. The average pass rate for schools in the Drakenstein area has dropped by 10% compared to last year. Two local students are among the top 20 students in the Western Cape. They are Stephan Spies of Huguenot High, in eighth position, and Mené van der Westhuizen of Paarl Girls’ High, in 15th position. Paarl Boys’ High was commended as one of the top ten schools for academic excellence within certain criteria, including the percentage of students with a university pass. Schools with a pass rate of 100% are Boys'' High, La Rochelle Girls’ High School, Paarl Girls’ High, Paarl Gymnasium, Boland Agricultural High School, Franschhoek High, Bridge House and Tersia Theron Private School. Labori High boasts a 99% pass rate and Huguenot High has a pass rate of 98,6%.Al-Azhar Institute had an 86,67% pass rate, followed by Berg River and New Orleans (both 83,3%), Klein Nederburg (81,99%), Weltevrede (79,83%), Groendal (74,55%), Kylemore (73,98%), Wellington Secondary (57,41%), Paulus Joubert (56,47%), Noorder Paarl (52,82%), and Charleston Hill (41,57%), with Desmond Tutu High trailing at 35,69% (dramatically down from 59,6% last year).* Bridge House School had a 100% pass rate and a 100% subject pass rate in the internationally benchmarked Independent Examinations Board exams. Forty of the 42 students achieved a Bachelor Degree pass. The top student was Abigail Goschen who achieved seven distinctions, with three subjects over 90% (Afrikaans 93%, English 90% and Mathematics 97%). Four students came in the top 1% nationally in five subjects. They are Abigail Goschen (Afrikaans and English), Jordyn Critchfield (Maths Literacy), Bastian Belke (German) and Edoardo Gambardella (Italian).
