Star chef from Grande Roche to travel

2010-01-21

THE Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl’s executive chef, Roland Gorgosilich, has been invited to participate in the fourth edition of the Tribute to Claudia International Gourmet Festival from 16-24 January at the hotel-restaurant Vila Joya in Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal.

The only South African-based chef invited to take part, Roland will join seven other star chefs in the prestigious gastronomic event where the kitchen of the resident chef Dieter Koschina will host some of the most resounding names in world gastronomy, all of whom have been distinguished with stars in the Michelin Guide.

At the gourmet festival, which is one of the biggest in Europe, each chef will present a signature menu, to include at least seven courses, along with suggestions for wines to pair with the meal.

The Vila Joya’s restaurant is the only one in Portugal with two stars in the Michelin Guide.

“It’s a great honour for the Grande Roche that Roland has been invited to participate, as (from what I understand) Bosman’s is the only restaurant attending that does not have a Michelin Star – which is our ultimate quest!” says the Grande Roche Hotel’s Food & Beverage manager, Alan Bailes.

Originally from Austria, Roland Gorgosilich was promoted to executive chef at the Grande Roche (rated the world’s 29th best property) in 2009 and it is under his hand that the hotel’s restaurant, Bosman’s, has retained its sheer culinary class, where guests are assured of classic cuisine infused with modern imagination and innovation.

With one of the only accredited sommeliers in South Africa, Bosman’s has also been awarded by Wine Spectator for having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world for the second time in a row. Last year the Grande Roche underwent a matchless refurbishment to maintain its position as a celebrated hotel.
