SPCA wants to make a difference

SPCA wants to make a difference

2010-01-21

THE SPCA wants to make a difference, but with limited funds and without help of the community they could face closure.

“Each SPCA belongs to their community and we strive to help our community and their animals,” says Linda Groenewald, manager of the SPCA in Paarl.

“Funding is required, because taking care of animals and investigating cruelty cases costs money.”

The SPCA is hampered by members of the public who phone them to remove stray animals.

“We are not responsible for capturing abandoned animals during the week. That is the re-sponsibility of Drakenstein Municipality, who brings the animals to us as we are the municipal pound.

“We assist with capturing service after hours and over weekends. The service number is 021-872-4755. If you find an animal on the street you can call this number.

“It is our responsibility to care for unwanted and abandoned animals and find good homes for them. We are also involved in educational programs, weekly clinics and sterilisation programs.

“We do not have animal doctors, but we do help the public to get their animals spayed. We will help with the transport of animals, but the public have to pay for such a service,” she said.

“We want the public to get involved. With more members we will have more power to make a difference.”

To become a member, phone the Paarl SPCA on 021-863-2720 or Wellington SPCA on 021-864-3726. Donations are welcome.
