7 % increase for councillors
2010-01-28
COUNCILLORS of the Drakenstein Municipality are in line for a 7% salary increase. In total, ratepayers will pay R14 853 027 for their services (within the R15,3 million budgeted for the 2009/10 book year and based on a Grade 4 municipality). The determination of the salaries, allowances and benefits for councillors was one of only a few agenda points at last week’s mayoral committee meeting. Charmaine Manuel, Mayor of Drakenstein, tops the list with a package of R576 275 per annum, followed by the R461 020 earned by the speaker and deputy mayor before tax. Members of the executive mayoral committee will receive R432 206 while normal councillors earn R172 881 per year. If the council receives the green light for this 7% increase, travel and cellphone allowances will also increase. More than R3 million will be available for travel allowances per annum, with a R17 100 cellphone allowance each for the mayor, deputy mayor and the speaker. The first of only six council meetings for 2010 is scheduled for 27 January at 14:00 at the council chamber. The number of full council meetings has been decreased “to save costs”.
