Champion tree
2005-09-08
A HUGE oak tree in Groot Drakenstein has been provisionally declared a “national champion tree” worthy of conservation in honour of Arbor Day.
The oak tree considered to be more than 200 years old is located on the farm Zorgvliet-Delta. It is among a total of 24 “champion trees” declared worthy of conservation.
They are considered magnificent examples of their species by virtue of their age and esthetic or historic value.
People who wish to nominate champion trees can contact Prof Bredenkamp on 808-3295 or email bvb@ sun ac.za.
