THERE was much joy at the Phola Park Clinic in Mbekweni last week, when a baby suddenly made its arrival. Nursing staff at the clinic were informed by a receptionist on Wednesday morning that a young woman who was in the waiting area had gone into labour. The young mother, aged 22, who had recently moved to the area from the Eastern Cape, had come to the clinic to arrange her clinic visits in preparation for the birth of her child. Nursing staff dropped everything that they were busy with and pitched in to help with the exciting event. The ambulance was called, but the baby’s head had already started to appear, and there was no time to waste. And very soon the healthy little baby boy made his arrival. Although he was a few weeks premature, there were no complications. Mother and baby were transported to Paarl Hospital by ambulance personnel, and both were declared healthy on their arrival. For Sisters Naomi Farmer and Johanna Barties it was a very special moment, as it was the first time in almost 20 years that they had delivered a child. And it was also the first time that a baby had been born in the clinic.
