I WAS taken aback to read the Paarl Post posters which read “World Cup Hopes Fading?”.
For a start it did not refer to a lead article (as one would expect), but rather a small feature article on page two, by Lise Beyers, referring to the disappointing interest in Paarl as a base venue for the various visiting teams from around the world for 2010.
I have no problem with that article and sympathise with the hopefuls in Paarl who were expecting more interest in the town.
What I feel is misleading, is that the poster makes no mention of Paarl as such, and therefore could be read as a negative comment on the national state of the 2010 expectations.
Many people have invested huge amounts of money and effort in to making this event the success it deserves to be, and the media should play its part by not making comments which could turn people away.
The good news is that 80% of the tickets have already been sold and if The Draw in Cape Town is anything to go by, ours will be one of the very best World Cups ever - and may the best team win!
