Plea to curb Mbekweni violence

Plea to curb Mbekweni violence

2010-02-11

AFTER a relatively peaceful 2009, Mbekweni police are worried about the current rise in violent crimes in this neighbourhood.

According to Station Commissioner Supt Cornelius Geldenhuys, 16 residents of Mbekweni lost their lives due to violent crimes in 2009. This is generally lower than previous years.

But during last month alone, three people lost their lives due to such crimes.

“If this trend continues,” said Geldenhuys, “we will not be able to further decrease our statistics. The public can play a very important role in helping the police to combat crime by reporting any criminal activities to the police.”

The community is also urged to hand in any unwanted or illegal firearms and ammunition at the police station by 11 April.
