THOUSANDS of proud South Africans turned out for the 27 For Freedom run at Drakenstein Correctional Services (formerly Victor Verster Prison) just outside of Paarl on Saturday.

The event to commemorate the release of Nelson Mandela 20 year ago was organised by the Cape Winelands District Municipality and Drakenstein Correctional Services.

According to Pieta Koopman of Wellington, winner of the men’s category in the 27km race, he had an amazing race.

“I really enjoyed today’s race, the route was really nice. The concept behind this race is awesome, things can only get better from here,” said Koopman, who completed the race in an awe-inspiring time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 3 seconds.

Avukile Ngongama came in second, while Vevani Lusasini finished third.

Bulelwa Mtshagi was victorious in the women’s category of the 27km race when she crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 1 hour 47 minutes and 49 seconds.

Farwa Mentoor came in second, while Marlene Hannes finished third.

Tom Lusaseni secured himself a first place in the men’s category of the 10 km race, followed by Dicardo Jacobs in second place, while Enrico Rooi finished third.

Mari Rabie crossed the finish line first in the women’s category of the 10km race, followed by Vuyisi Seti in second place and Louisa Hendricks third.

According to deputy mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Clarence John­son, the race turn-out was tremendous.

“I am really happy with the logistics and event management team in putting together a memorable event.”
