Half million rand for bursaries
2010-02-18
EVERYTHING is set for a further increase in bursary opportunities through the Mayoral Bursary Fund of the Drakenstein Municipality. For the 2009/2010 year, 27 applicants (all residing in Drakenstein), received bursaries. The Bursary Fund received 64 applications. Mayor Charmaine Manuel said in a recent mayoral committee meeting that they wish to increase the amount to R500 000, that will allow 48 applicants for the 2010/2011 year to qualify. The critical issues for further approvals will be the location of applicants (including Saron, Gouda and Simondium applicants) and study areas. “This is not our core business, but we want to take a leading role so that we see the results 20 years down the line,” Manuel said. For this year, 13 applicants qualified for financial services, three for electrical engineering, five for civil engineering, five for tourism and one for town and regional planning.
