Electricity tariffs increase in July
2010-03-04
ALTHOUGH the National Electricity Regulator (Nersa) has approved an increase of 24,8% in Eskom electricity tariffs from 1 April, residents of Drakenstein will only feel the impact in the first account received after 1 July. This is when the annual municipal increase in tariffs becomes effective. Nersa last week approved an average Eskom increase of 24,8% for 2010, with further increases of 25,8% in 2011 and 25,9% in 2012. This means that electricity costs will effectively double in the next three years. According to Nersa, municipalities may not raise the tariffs of domestic consumers who use less than 600 kWh per month by more than 15,3% (16,3% in 2011 and 16,3% in 2012) before adding VAT and distribution costs. Domestic consumers who use more than 600 kWh per month face a much bigger increase, however, while industrial consumers can also expect a considerable increase. The municipal council decision on local tariff increases will be taken in May.
