THE Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB Challenge, South Africa’s largest mountain-bike event, is set to take place at the Boschendal Wine Estate this weekend. Thousands of riders and spectators are expected at the two-day event on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March. Due to a number of roadworks in the area, participants are advised to arrive at the venue 1,5 hours before their starting time. According to Meurant Botha, co-organiser of the MTB Challenge, they expect the roadworks to congest traffic and cause delays. “We have made arrangements with the local traffic authorities to ease the traffic flow to the venue, but motorists are advised to add an hour to their journey when travelling to Boschendal this weekend.” Motorists and residents are advised that the traffic flow between the R45 turn-off and Pniel will be severely disrupted between 06:00 and 12:00 on both days. Journey times from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek via the R310 (in both directions) will also be affected, and motorists are advised to use the R44 via Klapmuts and Simondium as an alternative route. The MTB Challenge is first and foremost a family event and riders are encouraged to bring their wives, husbands and young ones for a perfect day out. Limited late entries will be available at registration. Roads in the central area will be closed from 05:00 to 09:30 and 11:15 to 13:00. Bainskloof will be closed between 10:40 and 12:00 and the Nuwekloof Pass between 10:00 and 11:00. On Thursday 11 March the stage starts and ends in Paarl’s Market Street, which will be partially closed from 05:00 to 09:30 and 12:30 to 14:30, with delays also expected in Franschhoek Main Road 10:00 to 11:00. The Du Toit’s Kloof Pass will be closed from 12:00 to 14:00, the Rooihoogte Pass (between Villiersdorp and Worcester) from 11:30 to 12:30 and the Franschhoek Pass from 10:00 to 11:00.
