2010-03-18

A TEENAGER drowned on Saturday afternoon at the Weltevrede public swimming pool in Wellington.

The girl, Mzekwa Weziwe (13), from OR Square in Mbekweni, had gone to the swimming pool with friends on Saturday.

The caretaker of the swimming pool, Titus Williams, heard screams shortly after 13:00. When he went to investigate, he saw a child at the bottom of the pool at the deep end.

Williams dived into the pool and brought the child to the surface. He tried to resuscitate Mzekwa, and when paramedics arrived, they too tried to resuscitate her, but in vain. She was declared dead on the scene and her mother was summoned.

It is not known how long she had been under the water.

Mzekwa was a Grade 6 learner at Langabuya Primary School.

She is survived by her mother Nomelikaya Simelane (38).
