Taking a look at careers in science
2010-03-25
THE success of this year’s Soccer World Cup depends not only on the players and the coaches - but also on hundreds of scientists from various disciplines who are contributing their expertise towards the tournament. Behind the scenes, teams and teams of exercise specialists, cartographers, physiologists, computer programmers, financial experts, laser physicists, sport scientists, biologists, plastics manufacturers, water microbiologists, teachers, virologists, textile scientists, applied mathematicians and geologists are working together to help the tournament succeed, each in their own disciplines. To learn more about the study options available in die science field, you can attend the Maties Science Winter Week, which this year, will be held at Stellenbosch from 13 to 17 June and which will give a kick-start to your decisions on the study and career options for you to follow. The Maties Science Winter Week spotlights the various Bachelor of Science study programmes in the physical, mathematical and biological sciences offered by the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University. Here - through informative talks, discussions with lecturers and visits to places of work - you can find out how you can convert your love of chemistry, maths, physics, cells, plants, animals, atoms, genetics and graphs into a successful career choice. The R1 000 enrolment fee includes accommodation and meals (the closing date for enrolments is 7 May). For more information, contact Mariétta van den Worm at 021-808-3760 or mvdworm@sun.ac.za, or visit www.sun.ac.za/science and click on “Winter Week”.
