School can win R1 million in soccer tournament

2010-03-25

LOCAL schools are but a tournament away from striking it rich in South Africa’s biggest high schools soccer competition, but they must not allow the grass to grow under their feet. Closing date for entries is less than three weeks from now.

The sponsorship of R30 million over five years is co-funded by Sanlam, the Motsepe Foundation and the Sanlam Ubuntu-Botho Community Development Trust.

The tournament aims to contribute to the development of South African school’s soccer and to nurture future soccer stars.

The 2010 tournament will kick off with district rounds in all provinces on 1 April, followed by regional finals leading up to the finals in August.

Over 5 000 schools from all nine provinces are expected to participate in the tournament, with the two top teams from each province ultimately competing for the first place prize money. All soccer-playing high schools may enter teams.

The winning school will walk away with R1 million. The second, third and fourth placed schools will receive R600 000, R500 000 and R400 000 respectively.

The nine provincial winners will each receive R100 000 for their efforts.

The annual prize-money of R3,4 million will be used to improve the educational facilities and to develop football at the winning schools.
