Historical end of season for Mbekweni Cricket School
2010-03-25
THE Mbekweni Cricket School recently celebrated the end of the cricket season with a historic occasion when the local schools played against each other for the first time with a hard ball. The cricket festival was held at the rugby stadium and matches were played on artificial wickets with the focus on participation and talent identification. The schools that participated were Imboniselo Primary, Mbekweni Primary, Langabuya, Ihlumelo, Desmond Tutu and the Mbekweni Cricket school team. During the past season the Mbekweni Cricket School held cricket sessions every Friday at Mbekweni Primary. A large number of boys and girls attended and enjoyed the sessions with more than 500 attending each of the last couple of sessions. During the season Sasko provided bread and Pepsi the drinks for the active cricketers. The Cricket School has become a talking point for the Mbekweni community and will play a huge role in the area. The spirit created within the Cricket School will help build connections and friendships within the township, says the organiser, Merwe Genis.
