Yorkshire stands tall

THE EMG Yorkshire CyclingAcademy riders were in full force over the past weekend, with the first ever Western Cape Track Championships, hosted at the Bellville Velodrome from Friday to Sunday. Yorkshire competed in the u.12 to veterans categories, against cyclists from the Western Province, Boland and Southern Cape. In the Elite Team Sprint event, the academy team of Verdi Farao, Reginald Benjamin and Avery Arendse just missed the bronze medal, with the event being won by Bellville CC, followed by Wilde Fruit Team and Rhadsport CC. In the 15km scratch race the academy riders attacked from the start, but eventually it was Stefan Ihlenfeldt (CT Market) who crossed the finish line first, followed by Evan Carstens and Reneil Matthyssen (Wilde Fruit). In the under 16 category academy riders Dino Daniels, Franklin Stoffels and Angelo Diedericks rode to a well -deserved 2nd place in their Team Sprint event. Stoffels also showed promise when he came third in the under 16 30 laps scratch race, which was won by Bradwin Daniels (Peco CC). On the 2nd day the academy riders were also ever impressive and finished on the podium in numerous races. In the u.14 500m Time Trial, JC Jantjies of Yorkshire took the gold medal (40,65 seconds), with his teammate Graeme Ockhuis in 2nd and Ayoob Isaacs 3rd. Jantjies also took the other two u.14 titles, the 1500m and 40 laps points race. In both events Ockhuis was 2nd, with Lee-Arthur Green (Yorkshire) claiming bronze in the u.14 1500m. The academy u.16 team pursuit team rode to a well-deserved 2nd place in the 3000m Team Pursuit, being beaten by a mixed team of Bradwin Daniels, Abrahams and Brent van Rooyen. Yorkshire’s elite riders also impressed in the 4000m team pursuit, winning the silver medal. In the Elite Elimination Race Avery Arendse took the bronze medal, with the race being won by Reneil Matthyssen (Wilde Fruit). The Elite Points Race was won by Ihlenfeldt, with Christians (Rhadsport) second and Reginald Benjamin (Yorkshire) third. In the under 16 category Dino Daniels (Yorkshire) won bronze in the 2000 m individual pursuit and silver in the 60 laps Points Race behind Daniels. Franklin Stoffels came third in the 1500 m event.
