A 99-YEAR-OLD resident of Mbekweni, Nompoxo Sijaji, passed away recently in her home in Project 2, Mbekweni, six months after she finally enjoyed the luxury of her own brick home. She received the house from the Mayor on Heritage Day last year, after living in a shack for most of her life. “It is a dream come true for me to have keys to my own house. I am so happy I feel like crying,” she said at the time. She is survived by four children, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren. She was buried next to her husband in Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape. Said granddaughter Ntombizanele Bhaza (32): “I am very happy that she got to live in her own house before she passed away. “One thing that she really wanted was to have a house which her children could call home. She did not want to be taken out of a shack when her last day came,” Bhaza said. “We as family had plans to have a party for her on her 100th birthday on 2 June, but it was not to be.”
