A show house that was declared too small for the beneficiaries’ liking in Project 2, Mbekweni, is still standing after 12 years and causing problems for the beneficiary of the site.

The house has been occupied by Zityilelo Skiti (30) who says: “I have been staying here since 1998 looking after the houses since they were being vandalised.

“Since the community never liked this houses and it was a show house I moved in, to look after the house. I was one of the people who work at Asla Construction which developed the area and built the show houses,” Skiti said.

Nontskelelo Nqula (50), the beneficiary to whom the plot has been allocated, already has her title deed.

Currently she lives in a leaking shack in the backyard of a house in Phola Park.

“I reported this last year to the officials, but nothing has been done to date,” she says sadly.

May Carolissen, spokesperson of Drakenstein Municipality, said: “The illegal person was recently asked to vacate the house so that Mellon Housing can construct the Breaking New Ground (BNG) 40m˛ house for the beneficiary,” said Carolissen.

“However, the illegal occupier can only be evicted by court order which is a process. The Housing Department must now institute legal action against the illegal occupier, as he refuses to vacate the house.”
