Local canoeists claim awards

THE annual awards evening for the WCCU’s 2009 season was held at the Devonvale Golf Estate near Stellenbosch recently and was hosted by WCCU’s 2010 season chairman, Herbert Conradie. Several members of Paarl Canoe Club were deservedly awarded for their achievements last year. The Guest of Honour who handed out the major awards of the evening was Willem van Riet – a paddling legend in South Africa and overseas. Van Riet is eyeing the Berg again in 2010 (he started paddling the Berg in the early 1960’s). WCCU was also fortunate to have the new president of Canoe South Africa, Naas Fischer, in attendance. He also did the honours in presenting the SA National and SA Federation Colours Awards. The following paddlers of Paarl Canoe Club received awards for their achievements in 2009: SA Federation Colours - André Rabie (Master’s World Canoe Marathon Championships, Portugal; gold medallist 55 to 59 years, K2), Giel van Deventer (Master’s World Canoe Marathon Championships, Portugal; bronze medallist 60 to 64 years, K1), Wayne August (CSA team Manager to the All Africa Canoeing Championships). Junior SA Federation Colours (CSA team to All Africa Canoeing Champs) - She-Earl de Wee, Joseph Williams, Diveiano Pieterson. WCCU Provincial Colours - Pieter-Willem Basson, André Rabie, Giel van Deventer. Watson Trophies - Michael-Lee Farringer (u.14, Bridge House); Joseph Williams (u18, Paarl CC). WCCU President’s Trophy Awards - Joseph Willimas (u.18 boys), André Rabie (sub-grandmaster), Giel van Deventer (grandmaster). SA National Colours: Pierre-André Rabie (national u.23 team; World Canoe Marathon Championships), Crisjan Coetzee (u.18, CSA tour to Moscow, World Junior Canoe Sprint Championships).
