Behind bars again
2010-04-08
A RETIRED detective of Paarl police station has landed up behind bars again, barely two weeks after he was released from prison. Nardie Groenewald has been in and out of prison during the past year on various charges of possession of stolen goods. Groenewald, who was previously a respected detective of Paarl Police’s serious crimes unit, had been in custody since October, after he and an accomplice were allegedly caught on camera removing bull-bars from vehicles at a second-hand car dealer in Paarl North. Several months before this incident, he was arrested by Franschhoek Police for the alleged theft of diesel from farms. And before that he was arrested in Paarl, also allegedly in possession of stolen goods. But when Groenewald recently appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court he was released when crucial witnesses did not attend the hearing. And barely back on the street, Groenewald was evidently up to his old tricks. He and an old accomplice, Jan de Witt, were caught red-handed breaking into a vehicle, coincidentally that of a policeman at La Uva flats in Paarl North. They appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and remain in custody at Allan- dale Correctional Services.
