THE Franschhoek Trust in association with Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival present the second Franschhoek Classical Music Festival from 28 to 30 October.

There will be twelve concerts, sponsored by La Motte, Nedbank, Clarins, Haute Cabriere, La Fontaine, Old Mutual, Pam Golding International and the Franschhoek Trust.

* Prelude: James Grace, an ward-winning graduate of the Royal College of Music-London, plays a recital of classical guitar music from his debut solo CD Granada at Klein Oliphants Hoek on Thursday 27 October at 19:00.

The performance takes place in the vaulted drawing room with dinner in the private dining room. Tickets include a three-course meal and welcome drink. Call 876-2566.

* Concert 1: Chamber music for clarinet, bassoon and clarinet, featuring the outstanding American clarinet virtuoso Diana Bures, will be presented at La Motte on Friday 28 October at 19:00.

Diana is joined by Todor Balkandjiev (Principal Bassoon of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra) and Christopher Duigan at the piano.

The programme features rarely performed music for the three instruments by CPE Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Mikhail Glinka plus other solo works.

The performance in this welcoming historic venue is followed by finger snacks and a glass of wine. Call Franschhoek Wine Valley, 876-3603.

* Concert 2: In the informal café atmosphere at Piccata enjoy a presentation of sophisticated and popular songs from the musicals, Cole Porter, George Gershwin with an unusual but entertaining twist of bitter-sweet on Friday 28 October at 20:00.

Federico Freschi with Christopher Duigan at the piano present a cleverly detailed programme. Music begins after 21:00. Includes a three-course meal. Call 876-3534.

* Concert 3: At the NGK Church on Saturday 29 October at 11:00 leading percussion duo FourIVTwo, Magda de Vries and Frank Mallows, present an exceptional programme of music for concert marimba and vibraphone.

From Bach and Baroque to jazzy and atmospheric numbers they enchant with brilliant virtuosity and energy. Tickets at 876-3603 and at the door.

* Concert 4: In the NGK Church on Saturday 29 October at 13:00 a special lunchtime concert is presented with a variety of musicians in one event that is suitable for all ages.

Concertgoers will be treated to performances by Christopher Duigan (piano), the Kerimov Trio, Federico Freschi (baritone), the Crowson Duo and Diana Bures (clarinet).

The varied programme of a fun and educational nature includes Flight of the Bumble-Bee, The Entertainer and others.

The performers are all regular participants in Music Revival concerts. Tickets at 876-3603 and at the door.

* Concert 5: A Classical Recital by the Crowson Duo - Four Hands One Piano - is presented at Haute Cabriere on Saturday 29 October at 14:30 for 15:00.

Anneke Lamont and Christopher Duigan have performed extensively together at one and two pianos.

Their programme includes music by Mozart, Poulenc, Debussy and Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor.

* Concert 6: In the NGK Church, Saturday 29 October at 16:45 an early evening performance is presented by leading South African soprano Zanne Stapelburg. Performing a popular selection of opera arias and song, the talented young soprano is joined by Francois du Toit at the piano. Tickets at 876-3603 and at the door.

* Concert 7: Diana Bures (clarinet) teams up with Christopher Duigan (piano) once again to revisit their brilliant selection of classics to jazz - Dizzy Fingers - at La Grange on Saturday 29 October at 19:00.
Including the popular Adagio from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, music by George Gershwin and a selection of Benny Goodman compositions, the Los Angeles-based clarinettist brings a touch of show-biz attitude to a dinner performance at the popular La Grange.

* Concert 8: Don’t miss the brilliant nine-player Baroque Orchestra Camerata Tinta Barocca, led by ace-violinist Quentin Crida, at the NGK Church on Sunday 30 October at 11:00.

Playing Concertos by JS Bach, Arcangelo Corelli and Antonio Vivaldi, the ensemble, who specialise in the authentic style performance of Baroque music, features the cream of Cape Town string players.

Their Sunday morning performance in the NGK Church also includes the Canon by Pachelbel. Tickets at 876-3603 and at the door.

* Concert 9: The popular Kerimov Trio play solo sonatas by Beethoven; Spring Sonata for violin and Cello Sonata No 3 Op 69 at Haute Cabriere on Sunday 30 October at 12:30 for 13:00.

Elena and Boris Kerimov are joined by Christopher Duigan (piano) in this classical recital exploring the passionate lyricism of Beethoven’s music.

Includes a glass of Pierre Jourdan Cap Classique before the concert and an option to enjoy a meal in the Haute Cabriere restaurant afterward. Call 876-8500.

* Concert 10: At the NGK Church, Sunday 30 October at 15:00 there is an extraordinary event - six brilliant cellists perform together for an unforgettable experience.

Featuring original compositions by Cape Town composer Alan Stephenson and popular classics, this ensemble provides a visual and auditory feast.

* Concert 11: Three of South Africa’s leading concert pianists share a recital in a exciting festival event at Haute Cabriere, Sunday 30 October at 16:30 for 17:00.

Johannesburg-based Anneke Lamont, Francois du Toit (Professor of Piano at UCT) and Christopher Duigan showcase the piano in a varied repertoire and end the performance with music for six hands at one piano.

Includes a glass of Pierre Jourdan Cap Classique before the concert. Call 876-8500.

* Concert 12: Festival finale: Russian virtuosos the Kerimov Trio (violin, cello & piano) play an exhilarating selection of Russian melodies including Two Guitars, Dark Eyes, and Kalinka at Piccata, Sunday 30 October at 19:00.

The performance by this high energy ensemble will have you reaching for the nearest vodka. They are joined by Federico Freschi (baritone) and Diana Bures for selected items ending the festival on a celebratory note.
