Success for local athletes

SEVERAL athletes from Paarl excelled during the Yellow Pages SA Junior and Youth Championships, which took place in Germiston over the weekend. One of the biggest success stories was that of 18-year-old Luvo Manyonga, of Desmond Tutu High School in Mbekweni, who won the long jump for junior men with a massive jump of 8,05m. Melissa Hewitt of Paarl Athletics Club won a gold medal in the 100m event, with a personal best time of 11,84 seconds. In 2009, at the same championships, Melissa (then in matric at La Rochelle) was also crowned the 100m champ. This year, Melissa also ran her personal best time in the 200m (24,02 seconds) to claim a silver medal. In the junior women 400m hurdles, Jean-Marie Senekal of Paarl Gymnasium kicked sand in the eyes of her opponents, by claiming gold with a time of 59,19 seconds. In the pole vault event, the girls of the Boland Pole Vault Academy in Paarl proved to be unmatched in South African Pole Vaulting. Taahirah Kozain of Paarl Gymnasium grabbed gold with a 3,25m jump, followed by Kulthoom Gaidien (silver, 3m) of Paarl Girls’ High and Nadia Giliomee (bronze, 2,90m) of Huguenot High in Wellington. They are all coached by Louis Nienhaber.
