Worker dies in dam accident

A STEEL cage that collapsed at the building site of the new Berg River Dam at Franschhoek last week, caused the death of a steel worker and serious injuries to two others.
Mphunzi Makhobeni (24), a steel fixer from George, was killed when a reinforcing steel cage collaped inside the conduit at the site.
Two shutterhands, Palao Leeba (26) and Kholisile Mbalizo (31), employees of contractor BRPJV, were seriously injured, but were discharged from hospital the next day.
Four others sustained minor injuries that were treated at the medical clinic on site.
The accident occurred as a tunnel shutter was being pushed into place.
Martie van Rensburg, CEO of TCTA, the implementing authority on the Berg Water Project, expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased and to those injured.
She expressed her gratitude to the emergency team and medical doctors who reacted effectively to the event.
An investigation has been launhced into the accident.
Makhobeni leaves his mother, his partner Asanda, and 10-year-old twin daughters.
Both his brothers, Luxolo and Masakhane, were working with him on the project.
“It is very sad that he died while working to bring life through water to millions of others,” project PRO George van der Merwe said.
