STRIKE action by municipal workers impacted heavily on Drakenstein. Hardly any services, including refuse removal, have been rendered this week and most municipal buildings were locked. About 200 municipal workers of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) gathered in Klein Drakenstein Avenue in Paarl East on Monday morning and marched to the municipal building to demand higher wages. Another group protested in front of the Wellington municipal office. Meanwhile angry residents resorted to dumping the contents of their overflowing refuse bins at the entrance to the locked refuse depot in Distillery Street, Paarl, and at the Wellington dump. Some unhappy residents have had no refuse removal since 1 April, due to the Easter weekend. All refuse removal has been stopped until the end of the strike, although dumped waste was removed from the streets by emergency teams consisting of municipal workers and workers from private companies. Normal refuse removal will resume as soon as the strike is over, and additional black bags may also be put out as a once-off concession.
