Tourism association gets new home
2005-09-15
THE Paarl Tourism Association in no longer homeless - an agreement has been reached that the association will share the Paarl Wine Tourism office with Paarl Vintners, at the corner of Main and Plantasie Street.
A tourism info desk will be set up there, with the capability to do bookings and answer tourism related telephone calls (the new number is 863-4886).
“Joint marketing and promotional strategies will be formulated around specific events and projects,” said outgoing chairman Gerard Frater at the AGM.
The office will be staffed by two front-desk employees (one on the payroll of Vintners, one on the payroll of Tourism) who will advise visitors on wine and tourism related enquiries and promote their members.
The Association lost its office at the corner of Main and Auret Street after Drakenstein Municipality decided to restructure the office and end the longstanding public/private partnership with the Association.
The staff at the tourism office have accepted one year contracts with the Municipality to stay on to promote the whole of Drakenstein area generically, while members of the Assocation may still display their brochures there.
According to the incoming chairperson of Paarl Tourism, Deseré Orrill-Legg, the Association had always kept the doors for communication with the Municipality wide open and would continue to do so.
They have also invited a representative of the municipality to join the executive committee of the Bureau as a non-voting member.
