SOUTH AFRICAN wines were once again given the green light at the judges' feedback session of the 2010 Old Mutual Trophy feedback session.

Nine internationally renowned wine connossieurs took part in the three days of judging of this wine competition which took place at the Grand Roche Hotel.

The Old Mutual Trophy Awards is generally regarded as one of the toughest and most rigorous events of its kind in the world.

Judges had the arduous, but pleasant task, of making their way through 1 012 submissions from 234 producers, in just three days.

During the feedback session it was unanimously agreed that there has been a general leap forward in the quality of local wines.

Especially Pinotage which has been lagging behind in international favouritism, due to technical problems in production which often lead to burnt rubber flavours, is showing signs of remarkable improvement.

One of the judges even went as far as to say that during the judging it became evident that Pinotage is capable of producing some sublime wines.

Judges were also surprised by various 2008 Shiraz wines which they described as full-bodied, very good quality wines, with few faults.

Cultivars which are planted in the correct terrroir also came up trumps, and especially foreign judges said that wine farmers should concentrate more on planting the right vines in the right place.

The results of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show will be announced in Cape Town on 17 May and the countrywide roadshow will run from 18 May to 1 June.

A public tasting will take place in Cape Town at the CTICC Jasminium Restaurant on Friday 28 May (17:00 to 20:00). Tickets are available via Computicket and cost R90 if purchased by 19 May or R120 thereafter or at the door.
