Prizes for budding artists in the Valley
2005-09-15
TWO Paarl learners have won prizes for their paintings of trees in an Arbor Day competition launched by the Fairest Cape Association and MTO Forestry.
The painting of a tree by budding artist Gershwin Williams, grade six learner at Hillcrest Primary in Wellington, will become part of a calendar titled “Trees are our Heritage”, while his school wins R2000. Marilize Anderssen, in grade nine at La Rochelle Girls' High, won a merit prize of R500.
The competition was open to all schools in the Western Cape.
The competition had two components: the learners had to do research about both indigenous and plantation trees and the role they play in the environment and then illustrate one of the trees and submit this as a calendar painting.
A total of 56 schools took up the challenge.
