AN exciting symphony concert with the Winelands Orchestra will take place at the Strooidak Church in Paarl on Sunday 9 May at 20:00, in which the wonderful 26 register Baroque organ will be heard.
Two well-known works for organ and orchestra, the Kirchen Sonata no 17 k336 in C major by Mozart and the famous Adagio for Organ and Strings by Tomasso Albinoni, will be performed.
This will be the second concert in the Strooidak Church by the Winelands orchestra, led by concertmaster Jurgen Schwietering and conducted by Bill Holland. The church houses one of the country’s finest baroque pipe organs in South Africa and boasts excellent acoustics.
The concerts will be a revival of one of the longest musical traditions in the country, as for over 150 years there used to be regular concerts once a month after the service on a Sunday night in this church.
The Winelands orchestra will be presenting regular concerts here as in the old days. Well-known musicians will perform as soloists, as well as deserving students who will perform present works with the orchestra who would not normally have the opportunity to perform.
The Winelands orchestra is made up of some of the country’s top orchestral players who were members of the now defunct Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras. Its repertoire extends from full symphonic music to smaller chamber orchestra works. There will be concerts with chorus and orchestra in future.
Tickets at the door are R85 (R65 students & children under 12). For enquiries, contact 076-334-9144.
