TRUE grit is an essential ingredient for police members in any part of the world.

Put policewomen from the four corners of the globe together - especially in stressful times, such as volcanic eruptions, and this proves to be true.

So say four of the 20 members of the International Association for Women Police (IAWP) who travelled to Paarl’s SAPS Training Institution for their 2010 board of directors meeting. Days after the meeting had finished, four of them were still ‘stranded’ at the Institution, surfing the Internet hopefully, just in case there was a solo flight some- where to take them back home.

One of the stranded is Jane Townsley, IAWP president: “We are immensely grateful for how the SAPS and the country are helping us, so we have decided to get involved in the community for the time that we are still here.”

These law enforcers are now getting involved in local voluntary work at a hospital, the SAPS Women’s Network at the Paarl Police Station and even a local school project until they return to their countries.

“We were bowled over by the hospitality and warmth of our hosts. Everyone has been so kind, and have bent over backwards to accommodate us.”

During the evenings they were hosted by SAPS Top Management from head office.
