THE rapid response of members of K9 Boland led to the arrest of four armed robbery suspects. The action started on Thursday morning at Joostenberg Deli on the R44, when four armed men entered the administrative office demanding money. Panic erupted when an employee activated the alarm. The robbers then locked 12 employees in an office and fled the building with only two cellphones. Once in the parking area, one of the robbers pressed his firearm against a client’s head and demanded that the man hand over the key of his car. But instead, the man threw the keys into the road. When one of the robbers went to retrieve the keys, a silver Toyota Corolla stopped in the road. The three robbers then removed the driver from the vehicle and sped off. Just as they were driving out of the gates of Joostenberg Deli, police officer Colonel Jan Louw and Captain JS Olifant arrived on the scene. They immediately gave chase and followed the fleeing suspects onto the Sandringham Road which leads to Bloekombos. During the chase, the driver of the Toyota lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll off the road. One suspect was arrested on the scene, while another one who had fled into an orchard, was taken down by other members of K9-Boland and their dogs, who had arrived to assist. A third suspect was arrested in Bloekombos, as well as a fourth suspect who had allegedly been driving a getaway vehicle. One of the suspects was currently out on bail, after receiving a 20 year sentence for armed robbery.
